How To Start Planning a Wedding - The First Steps

First of all, keep in mind that the longer you have to plan your wedding will usually be equal to the amount that your (as well as everyone else's) stress level is reduced.  Planning your wedding well in advance also allows you the ability to shop and compare wedding services and prices at your convenience rather than being put in the position of being forced to accept only what is available.  A significant amount of stress and money can be saved by planning your wedding in advance.

Regardless of the amount of time you have to plan your wedding,  because of limited availability, there are some essential components to your wedding that should be obtained BEFORE anything else.

Those components, in order of importance, are;

1. Your Wedding Ceremony Location (and officiant) -
The availability of the ceremony facility and the officiant will likely determine your exact wedding date. Wedding Ceremony Location Selection Guide can also be found in this wedding planning guide.

2.  Your Wedding Reception Location -
Since many wedding reception venues are booked a year or more in advance it is wise to book the facility as soon as you are sure of your wedding date.  Wedding Reception Site Selection Tips can also be found in this guide.  The availability of the reception facility will also likely affect your wedding date selection.

3.  Your Wedding Music  -
Better wedding music options are usually booked a year or more in advance.   Tips for  Wedding Music Entertainment Selection can be found in this wedding planning guide.

4.  Your Wedding Photographer / Videographer  -
The better photographers and videographers can be booked a year or more in advance. Since quality wedding photographs are essential to properly capturing your special day you should try to obtain the services of a quality photographer or videographer as soon as you know your wedding date.  You can find Tips for Selecting a Wedding Photographer and Tips for Selecting a Wedding Videographer  in this wedding planning guide.

5.  Your Wedding Caterer -
Although most larger caterers can service more than one wedding or special event on a given date, they are still limited when it comes to the number of events they can cater simultaneously.  Many of the better wedding caterers are booked to capacity a year or more in advance. There is a section in this guide for Wedding Caterer Selection Advice.

Our Wedding Planning Timeline and Checklists cover many of the main items you will need to address during the wedding planning process. However, since each wedding is unique and the specific requirements will vary, you will likely find that some listed items are not needed while other items that are not listed will become part of your personal wedding planning timeline.  Although our timeline is based on a 12 month wedding planning period, depending upon when you start planning your wedding, the timeline can be adjusted as needed.
